Filmmaker Oliver Stone has publicly apologized for remarks about Adolf Hitler and Jewish control of the media that many had denounced as anti-Semitic. The three-time Oscar-winning filmmaker, whose late father was Jewish but who was raised a Protestant and is now a Scientologist, made his controversial remarks in an interview with The Times of London newspaper. Stone was thumping the tub for his new 10-part TV series, "Secret History of America."
He told The Times that the new series will put dictators Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin into context. He then went on to attack the Jews, saying that Hitler got a bad rap due to Jewish control of the media. The Jews' control of the media also was the reason that the murder of the Jews by Hitler was emphasized while the 25-30 million Soviets who died due to Nazi aggression during World War II were not. He then blamed the Jews for the Israel lobby whose influence is the root of America's dysfunctional pro-Israel foreign policy.
Historical accuracy had never been one of the director's strong points. Stone recently directed the documentary South of the Border that is a hagiography of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, a self-proclaimed enemy of American imperialism whom many label a dictator. In the New York Times, Larry Rother mentions how Stone has often been lambasted for playing loose with historical fact and is guilty of such in his Chavez documentary.
The director's mea culpa read, "In trying to make a broader historical point about the range of atrocities the Germans committed against many people, I made a clumsy association about the Holocaust, for which I am sorry and I regret."
He then went on to try to exonerate himself from charges of anti-Semitism: "Jews obviously do not control media or any other industry,' he said, adding that the Holocaust was an 'atrocity'."
Frankenstein Monster
In his interview with The Times, Oliver Stone said that Adolf Hitler was a "Frankenstein monster," but one created in part by the United States and Great Britain, the countries that eventually destroyed Hitler's Nazi Germany, in partnership with Stalin's USSR during World War II.
"Hitler was a Frankenstein but there was also a Dr Frankenstein," Stone explained. "German industrialists, the Americans and the British. He had a lot of support." Stone believes Hitler was a scapegoat for capitalism run amok.
The filmmaker went on to blame Jewish control of the American media for the Nazi Führer's bad image. Stone also lambasted the "Jewish-dominated" mass media for the United States' policy towards Israel.
Oliver Stone went on to claim in The Times interview that the Holocaust was privileged over the loss of 25-30 million Soviet lives during World War II due to Jewish domination of the American media. Stone also got his licks in against Jewish/Israeli political lobbyists in the United States.
"There's a major lobby in the United States," Stone said of pro-Israeli groups. "They are hard workers. They stay on top of every comment, the most powerful lobby in Washington. Israel has f***** up United States foreign policy for years."
Mel Gibson
In a related development, Oliver Stone told Rupert Murdoch's London tabloid The Sun that Mel Gibson -- notoriously for the anti-Semitic tirade he went on after a 2006 drunk driving arrest by a Jewish sheriff's deputy in which he blamed the Jews for all the wars in world history -- will survive his latest scandal.
"Everyone is supposed to have an opinion, but most directors don't work that way," Stone told The Sun. "Projects are developed slowly, and over the course of weeks, months, there will be projects, and I am sure many of them will want to have Mel Gibson in them."
London's Daily Mail newspaper quoted American Jewish Committee director David Harris for the American Jewish community's reaction to Stone's remarks. A statement released by Harris said, "By invoking this grotesque, toxic stereotype, Oliver Stone has outed himself as an anti-Semite."
Harris' statement then went on to trash Gibson, whose reputation is in tatters after the Web site RadarOnline posted the leaked "Gibson rant tapes" in which the movie star -- who, like Stone, is an Oscar-winning director -- threatens his baby mama Oksana Grigorieva and makes racist remarks.
"For all of Stone's progressive pretensions," the statement reads, "his remark is no different from one of the drunken, Jew-hating rants of his fellow Hollywood celebrity, Mel Gibson."
