WH Smith apologise for promoting Fritzl book as Father's Day gift

Shocked shoppers find Josef Friztl book in Top 50 choice for Father's Day in a display at WH Smith store.

WH Smith has said sorry after one of its London stores plugged a book on incest rapist Josef Fritzl as a Father’s Day gift.

The Crimes of Josef Fritzl, by Stefanie Marsh and Bojan Pancevski, was displayed alongside books by Dan Brown and Bond author Sebastian Faulks in a " Top 50 Books for Dad " promotion in the chain's branch in Lewisham, south-east London .

Shopper Matt James, 29, who found the book on display said : “Are they mad? He's probably the worst dad in the world. What he did to his children was horrible.”

Another, Rowena Langlois, 50, added: “It seems like some kind of sick joke. Has anyone in the company actually sat down and thought about this?”

A member of staff at the Lewisham branch told thelondonpaper : “It was accidental"

WH Smith’s head office was not available for comment, but had earlier issued an apology saying it was “a mistake by one store”.

A spokesman added: “It is not national policy. We will rectify this immediately.”

On the contrary, he worked on it openly with his university students and colleagues in Israel for several years; one of his students was even going to publish a paper on the subject. The author is extremely careful about what he says, and his conclusions must be taken seriously. It reads like a detective story.

If it had been published in Israel, in Hebrew, no one would have cared. There are large bodies of literature in Hebrew that Jews do not wish Gentiles to know about. But Dr. Toaff’s announcement of its publication in Italy, in Italian, raised a worldwide firestorm of fury. Under unbearable pressure, the book was withdrawn from publication, and is not to be re-issued.

You can strike a blow against censorship by circulating this text by e-mail or posting in on the Internet. No one can sue hundreds of people.

If the text is all over the Internet, and everybody has it and everybody knows what is in it, the cat will be out of the bag, and it will have to be published – sooner or later.
