In response to Justice Clarence Thomas‘s vote with
the majority of Supreme Court members in overturning a key provision of
the Voting Rights Act of 1965, MSNBC analyst Michael Eric Dyson compared the justice to a hypothetical Jewish person who sided with Adolf Hitler during the Holocaust, in support of genocide against his own people.
The high court voted 5-4 on Tuesday to overturn Section 4(b) of the
VRA, a portion of the law that had previously required all state and
local governments with a history of voting discrimination to get
clearance from the federal government before changing their voting laws.
The formula used by 4(b) was effectively unconstitutional and can no
longer be used as basis for pre-clearing jurisdictions seeking to change
their laws.
Justice Thomas voted in concurrence with the majority decision, which included Chief Justice John Roberts, and Justices Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, and Samuel Alito.
Appearing Wednesday afternoon on MSNBC’s Martin Bashir,
Dyson spoke negatively of Thomas — a black American — for having voted
to overturn this VRA provision. “Clarence Thomas’ actions here today —
though consistent, though tragic to me — are even more so in light of
the bulk of decisions he’s rendered in the name of a judicial vote on
the Supreme Court,” Dyson told Bashir.
“A symbolic Jew has invited a metaphoric Hitler to commit holocaust and genocide upon his own people,” .
