Menendez to meet with Israeli president

The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will meet Tuesday with Israeli President Shimon Peres, Israeli media report.

Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) is traveling to Jordan and Israel to discuss a slew of Middle Eastern issues, notably the crisis in Syria, Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and Iran's alleged nuclear weapons program.

Menendez's committee passed legislation last week to arm vetted Syrian rebel groups, a move so far opposed by the White House. The chairman is also working with the Obama administration on legislation to toughen sanctions on Iran that he is expected to introduce in the coming weeks.
