Swiss official fired for anti-Semitic email

A local authority in Switzerland has fired an employee who sent the Israeli embassy an email expressing joy about the death of Jews in a terrorist attack.

Maurus Candrian, an official serving in the construction department of the canton of St. Gallen, was fired last week, the Swiss paper Tagblatt reported on March 25. Last year he sent an email to the Israeli embassy in Bern, in which he wrote: “That is a good day in my life. I am proud of the heroes who killed Jews.”

In a communiqué published on March 25, the department where Candrian worked as section chief on environmental impact assessment wrote: “The department distances itself from the statements made by this employee," adding they were “incompatible” with its values.

St Gallen prosecutors have separately imposed a conditional fine and penalty on Candrian, a former co-president of the Green Liberal Party.

The case is cited in the Anti-Semitism report 2012 which was published last week.
