Kerry sworn in as US secretary of state, says will visit Israel

US new secretary of state exhibits great commitment to Israeli-Palestinian peace process, plans to reignite talks; announces visits to Israel, Egypt in near future

Newly appointed Secretary of State John Kerry announced his plan to visit Israel and Egypt immediately after being sworn in to his new position, signifying the US' determination to promote peace in the Middle East in the current administration.

Hillary Clinton, who officially resigned Friday as the 67th US secretary of state, bid farewell to American foreign service workers who applauded her as she left the State Department.

Washington has great expectations from the next Israeli government, as it perceives Yair Lapid's Yesh Atid as a party that expresses the will of the Israeli public to resume peace negotiations with the Palestinians.

In the Senate hearing to confirm his nomination, Kerry expressed his conviction in regards to reigniting the peace process and referred to the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as key for resolving other conflicts in the region.
