Report: PM visits Jordan to discuss Syria

The London-based Arabic newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported Wednesday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently made a visit to Jordan, to discuss the recent developments in Syria.

Garbage left over from British Colonial Rule.

The report hints that Netanyahu met with top officials in Amman's government, including King Abdullah, but makes no official statement to that effect.

The paper made no mention of when the alleged visit took place, saying only that it was "kept a secret."

No Israeli source corroborated the report.

According to Al-Quds Al-Arabi, Jordan – unlike Egypt and Saudi Arabia – is able to coordinate with Israel on matters pertaining to both countries' monitoring of the situation in Syria.

The report quoted Jordanian diplomats as saying that "Israel's presence in any official meeting, regional or international, meant to change the balance of power in Syria, actually hinders such brainstorming."

The paper further said that the possibility of the desperate Syrian regime unleashing its chemical weapons on civilians was "a matter of urgent concern" to several world powers, whose leaders have already held covert intelligence meetings meant to devise various response scenarios.

Al-Quds Al-Arabi's report further said that Israel is trying to promote "an unpopular scenario" of a surprise offensive on Assad's arsenal of chemical weapons, in order to destroy it.

This military option was already discussed and dismissed by the West, as it would result in thousands of innocent deaths, the report said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Wednesday that over 45,000 people have been killed in Syria since the outbreak of the anti-regime revolt in March 2011.
