The National and University Library at Hebrew university’s Givat Ram campus is used to having haredim come and use the library for research. But it is also faced with a problem it hadn’t foreseen – haredim using the library’s computers to surf porn sites.

Library staff has increasingly caught yeshiva students watching porn movies and sites with pornographic content. The staff tries to closely monitor computer use and politely asks offending users, whatever their religious beliefs, to leave.

The library’s computers are only supposed to be used for educational research, and personal use of all kinds is not allowed.

However, the National Library is also regularly used by more professional haredi researchers and editors who sell their finished works to the library, and the library tends to allow them to use the library’s computers for personal use, as well, because that personal use is only incidental to their research.

The library says that it closely monitors all computer use, even that of professional researchers, and stops those users who are misusing the library’s computers, regardless of religious affiliation.
