ROMAN Polanski agreed a secret “hush-money” payoff of half-a-million dollars to his child-sex victim, court records revealed yesterday.
The Oscar-winning director believed the 1993 deal would pave the way for him to return to America a free man. But the plan misfired when he failed to pay on time.
Fugitive Polanski was forced to pay an extra $100,000 in interest when he finally settled three years later, according to a civil suit made public by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge.
The private action was unsealed from court records as a result of a media petition in the wake of Polanski’s arrest last week in Switzerland, where he is awaiting proceedings for extradition back to the US.
It reveals that his victim, Samantha Geimer, made repeated efforts to secure the money and at one stage even attempted to secure a court order to garnish his huge salaries from Hollywood studios.
Geimer, now 46, was 13 when Polanski plied her with champagne and drugs before having sex with her at the home of his friend, actor Jack Nicholson, in 1977.
Polanski, now 76, pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor as part of a plea bargain deal and served 42 days in prison for “psychological evaluation” before being released on bail.
He fled, initially to London, on February 1, 1978, after learning that his trial judge intended to sentence him to a prison term and has been a fugitive ever since, eventually settling in France, which has only a limited extradition agreement with the US.
