Israeli MPs to boycott Merkel speech

Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, will face empty seats during her address to the Israeli parliament next week, after a legislator said he would rather boycott the speech than listen to the language of the Nazis.

Mrs Merkel was given special dispensation to address parliamentarians during an official visit on Tuesday.

The honour is usually reserved for presidents and monarchs. At her request, she is to speak in her native language. But several legislators say the sound of German in the Knesset is a "disgrace" and want her to speak in English instead.

"German was the last language my grandmother and grandfather heard before they were murdered. The execution orders were given in German," said Arye Eldad, from the far-Right National Union party. "I plan to stand up and leave." More

Speaking at the American Jewish Committee (AJC) annual meeting in Washington, German Chancellor Angela Merkel denounced Iran and the Palestinian militant group Hamas for questioning Israel's right to exist.

"This is why it is intolerable for any German government when the Iranian president questions the right of Israel's existence."
